Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc., an engine-production subsidiary of the Japan-based auto giant, marked the start of four-cylinder engine production at its plant in Huntsville on Sept. 29.
Engines produced at the plant will be used in eight Toyota-brand models of the 12 Toyota and Lexus models produced in North America.
In a statement, the company said Toyota remained committed to localizing production.
The 2.5-liter and 2.7-liter four-cylinder engines will go into the all-new 2012 Camry, Highlander, Sienna and Venza models, the company said.
Toyota subsidiary Bodine Aluminum. Inc., which produces the cylinder heads and blocks for the four-cylinder engines, has increased its production capacity accordingly at its plants in Troy, Missouri, and Jackson, Tennessee.
The increase in production represents an additional investment of approximately $147 million (about 11.7 billion yen) and 240 new jobs, and at Bodine Aluminum, $25 million and 60 jobs.
